Speech given at Int. Conference on Artificial Intelligence: Risks, Regulations and Roadmaps, Dec 7th 2023. The conference addresses the balancing act of regulation: seeking to ensure neither too little nor too much. While we'll present and discuss major societal threats posed by AI, we'll also consider the missed opportunities if stringent regulations hinder AI-based scientific, economic, and general human progress.

Short abstract
For European decisionmakers the AI revolution is highlighting a number of challenges. Europe has for a while not been the birth place of the big technology companies, that will generate the growth and the jobs of tomorrow. And with the arrival of AI there are genuine concerns that the dominance of non-European technology will accelerate even further. With potential consequences for Europe’s global competitiveness.

So what to do about it? Regulation seems to be the (only) answer. But does it strike the right balance?

He joined Dansk Erhverv in 2023 as part of a strategic upgrade of the organization1. He is also a board member of Digital Europe and has a master’s degree in political science from the University of Copenhagen.
