Computer chips are the backbone of modern society, and has recently have a lot of interest due to production shortage. Jörg Hübner from DTU NanoLab give insight into the industy.
Computer chips are the backbone of modern society. There are three companies worldwide that can produce leading edge computer chips. Around 80% of these leading edge chips are produced in Taiwan and South Korea. There is a monopoly on a key tool essential for the production of leading edge chips.
Within a year it is envisioned to produce chips at the 2nm node – 2nm corresponds to 8 silicon atoms and in a first embodiment it will be possible to place 333mio transistors on a square millimeter.
How did the industry get there, what does this mean in terms of supply chains and geopolitics? How will the industry develop and how will the respective “Chip Acts” influence that development?
From a technology perspective, we will try to gain insight in this unique industry by taking a brief look at the history, reflect on its current status and see if that allows to deduct some trends for the future.
