Embracing the AI progress by Martin Ruby

Speech given at Int. Conference on Artificial Intelligence: Risks, Regulations and Roadmaps, Dec 7th 2023. The conference addresses the balancing act of regulation: seeking to ensure neither too little nor too much. While we'll present and discuss major societal threats posed by AI, we'll also consider the missed opportunities if stringent regulations hinder AI-based scientific, economic, and general human progress.

Short abstract
Meta has worked extensively with AI for years and it's an integrated part of the Meta platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. It's used for everything from serving relevant content and ads to the billions of users to cleaning up the platforms, detecting and removing illegal and harmful content. In the years to come AI will be an essential part of most things Meta will do, including building new computing platforms, virtual worlds and serving our users on our apps with new experiences. The basis for all this is responsibility, building in a safe and open way to the benefit of users and society around us. 

Bio
Martin is Public Policy Director in Meta (the company behind apps such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) in the Nordic countries and has been with the company since the beginning of 2018. 

Before joining Meta, Martin worked many years in politics in the Danish parliament and also held the position as special advisor to the minister in four different ministries over the years. From 2012-2015, Martin worked for Google in Denmark and Norway.
