Power electronics is everywhere – but faster switching creates new EMC challenges. Discover how electromagnetic interference arises in modern energy systems, how it can be predicted, and how engineers can mitigate it.
Power electronics is becoming ubiquitous. Renewable energy, electric transportation, energy storage and modern power conversion all depend on increasingly efficient and fast-switching power electronic converters.
But faster switching comes with a price. The same technology that enables smaller, more efficient and higher-performance converters also generates harmonic disturbances and electromagnetic noise that can interfere with the converter itself as well as surrounding electronic systems.
The challenge is becoming increasingly important with the introduction of wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductor technologies and the growing penetration of power electronics throughout the energy system.
In this presentation, Professor Pooya Davari from Aalborg University explains where conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) originates, how it propagates, and how engineers can predict and mitigate it already at the design stage.
The presentation covers EMI prediction in power electronic systems, black-box modelling techniques and practical approaches to EMC filter design. The aim is to provide both an understanding of the underlying mechanisms and an overview of the engineering tools available for designing the next generation of EMC-compliant power electronic systems.
