IAEA have established Small Modular Reactor (SMR)
regulators Forum based on an increased interest with Nuclear Business. Small
and medium-sized or modular reactors are an option to fulfil the need for
flexible power generation for a wider range of users and applications. Small
modular reactors, deployable either as single or multi-module plant, offer the
possibility to combine nuclear with alternative energy sources, including
renewables. SMRs are ideal technology to help in decarbonization and energy security
goals.
This webinar will include presentations from two
companies: Rolls Royce SMR and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH)
Rolls-Royce SMR uses established nuclear technology
and know-how, to offer a sustainable, low cost, repeatable and scalable
product, that can be rolled out around the world. Rolls Royce SMR was the first
vendor to apply for a Generic Design Assessmen (GDA) of an SMR design. The 470
MWe pressurized water reactor design was accepted for review in March 2022 with
Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) asking the ONR
and EA to begin the process. Rolls Royce SMR will present their reactor and
possible applications during the webinar.
GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) is a world-leading

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) has submitted a Generic Design Assessment (GDA)
entry application for its BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) to the UK
Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). GE Hitachi
will present their reactor and possible applications during the webinar.
Sweden already has:
- regulatory guidelines that only needs a modest
update for the licensing process
- a wide and deep competence and long experience in
PWR and BWR technology
- the safety analysis will not differ that much
from the safety analysis we already perform for our existing PWRs and
BWRs.
